Anyone Have Trouble with Corbin Saddle Bags Leaking??

  • We've got a customer who purchased Corbin saddle bags for his Slingshot and he's having a terrible time with leakage. Anyone else have this trouble? Any advice or suggestions? We'd love to get this fixed for him.
    Thanks!

  • On the Dark Side someone had said that they replaced the existing rubber sealer with a thicker one, and that seem to have worked. I have the Corbin Bags also but had not been caught in the rain. Mine do not always lock as they come open going down the road when hitting a hard bump. I talked with Corbin in Florida and they are helpful. I have tried what they sent me to do and it works for sometime then comes open again. Will taking the SS to them in Jan. when I return home from Mi. as they are under warranty till April 17.

  • A simple search of posts "on either side" will reveal a pattern of substandard quality control on these bags. Any purchaser of these does so at his/her own peril. I personally decided not to go with them (although they are quite hot looking), and went with other compensatory mods.

  • The Corbin bags are nice looking junk. I still have mine, and within the last couple of months I discovered a new fun flaw in the design. When it's really hot the crap plastic where the latch is attached becomes too flexible to close the door. It isn't rigid enough.

  • My understanding, from the customer, is that his call to California was re-routed to the Florida location where he was encouraged to drive so they could take a look at it. That's a haul from NC so we're doing everything we can to help him avoid that. We have already tried the "new, larger" seals but they were crimped upon arrival and haven't been any real help. We've also adjusted the doors for him but that provided little long-term help, too. Our Parts Dept. is contacting Corbin to request new doors. I'll let you know how that works out.
Thanks for the comments, y'all have been very helpful to us and our customer...I think he feels a little better knowing this isn't just happening to him :)

Oh, wow! I'm so sorry to hear that but I appreciate you passing that on. As we learn more about a product our Parts Dept. and Accessories Specialist can better serve our customers.
Has Corbin been any help in your situation??

This particular customer has had the door opening down the road issue, too. He drives often in the rain and does not want to be limited by the weather so I think we need to help him find some really high-quality, water-proof saddle bags to better meet his needs. I'd love to hear how your trip goes and what you find out while you are there. Maybe your experience can help this customer, too. ;)

For the most part Corbin has written us all off. I know several slingshot owners that were told explicitly by Corbin that they were not offering any support with the bags. We have all pretty much taken to trying to modify and shim the bags in various ways. Mine aren't completely awful, but for the price paid they are a massive rip off. Even more irritating is that the original design from Corbin was excellent. They had a robust two post latching system that worked extremely well. These later bags have been forced to work with the single post system you see now. Some folk are lucky and don't have issues.

Just an fyi I've got the original 2 post latching system which has been good overall. Stays shut and never leaked. However, the weekend before last I had it out in the sun for a few hours for a car show, opened one and I couldn't get it to stay closed. Seemed to fix itself as it cooled down. Guess they've all got a heat issue in addition to the other problems.

Yes. That's because the support for the latch is a piece of molded plastic. It has no rigid support in the heat. God awful design by a name that used to mean something.

You are an exemplary dealer having reached out to help out a customer with an after market accessory. Makes me wish I lived in NC!!!

  • I have worked feverishly and made several different mods to my bags to get them to function correctly! Now most folks(such as myself) only have issues with one side or the other. Mine happens to be the drivers side. I have finally come up with a fix to help keep the bag closed going down the road but have noticed that in extreme California heat I can tug on the door and the latch will easily open. Not a very theft detouring feature but at least it doesn't fly open on its own anymore. I also did add the thicker rubber with the help of @garyfraze who sent me the seals himself and it did help but did not totally eliminate the problem of the leaking(only reduced it a bit). The problem is not so much shimming the locking mechanism farther out like most believe. You need to unscrew the post on the actual door and add a couple thin fender washers (or any thin washer) to allow the head of the pin to fully clear the top of the locking mechanism. By shimming the locking mechanism further out you are only adding to the problem of changing the angle in which the pin head on the door can clear the latch in the lock.

Also my door sits further towards the back of the sling making the pin in the door hit the back of the bracket and then sliding into the latch....its not evenly centered to the latch. Therefore, I had to shim the bottom of the door so the pin would hit center to the latch! A real pain in the ass for $3300!!!

I live 1.5 hours away from Corbin in California and they are ABSOLUTELY NO FUKIN HELP! They even hung up on me when I was nothing but polite trying to get help on this issue! If these weren't so damn expensive or if there were a prettier alternative, I would take them off smash them on YouTube and then set them on fire in Corbin's damn parking lot!!

If you service dept would like I can call and facetime you with all the different methods to help resolve your customers issue....I have no problem helping a fellow slinger out! PM me @Brewer Cycles and Ill get back to you guys!

  • Listen to this man. He knows what he's talking about.

  • I seriously don't want to hijack this thread with tangantal remarks. But for anyone reading this looking for an alternative to Corbin Bags, I have ordered from slingmods.com the Alpha Luggage Rack system that mount to the back of the rollbars, combined with the PRP soft luggage bags that fit the racks perfectly. They are huge, and hold a lot more than the Corbin Bags. In addition, I am going with the Welter Dual Exhaust that exits the rear of the SS that will tidy up the appearance of the rear end. Once again, sorry for the digression.

  • Big time agree with you.

I appreciate you both saying so but that's just how we take care of our customers. Chris Brewer has been in business for over 35 years, he was born and raised here and now his son runs the business with him. We believe in relationships...not just sales. If you're ever in our area know that you're always welcome!

  • I don't believe it but I just got off the phone with garyfraze. He called to talk about the saddle bags, share his own horrible experience, and even offer to help our customer out! What a genuinely nice guy! @STYLIN, I can't believe you were treated that way. I'm hearing really bad things about Corbin- not just the products but the poor customer service.

Thanks so much for your help. I'm going to give our customer all of this information and get him in touch with @garyfraze, too. Hopefully, thanks to the generosity of all you Slingshot owners, we can this situation right for him.

Again, I appreciate everyone's willingness to help out! PS: If anyone will be on the East Coast Sept. 22-25, we invite you to the Slingshot Booze & Blues Rally in Clarksville, Va. We are hosting lunch with a Polaris Slingshot rep and a country-side ride on Friday, Sept. 23. You can contact @McCaw (or check out the event calendar on this forum) for more details. :D

Thanks @rickgi, I'll be sure to pass this info on to our customer, too. Knowing he has options may make him feel more empowered and not so taken advantage of.
